Winch Rope Installation & Care:
Whether it is a new winch (respool even if it's already spooled from the manufacturer) or you have used it while on the trail or just have it spooled out for cleaning, there are a few ways to tackle proper winch rope/cable spooling.

Regarding cleaning, whether rope or steel cable, it should be spooled out (you can leave it attached to the drum), cleaned with soap and water then left to dry before respooling. I suggest a light coat of WD-40 or Gibbs Penetrant (much better) on steel cable. Do this every 6 months even if you haven't used it. You need to work the winch anyway every so often.
While you have the rope/cable spooled out, give your winch a good cleaning and a coat of wax. Don't laugh, most winches are powder coated and will last much longer if kept clean. Gibbs Penetrant is another great solution for coating fasteners and other metal components, just don't get it on the spool.
